Cabot Hosiery Mills Opens (1978)
Marc Cabot opens Cabot Hosiery Mills in Northfield and starts knitting socks for big label brands like Gap and T.J.Maxx.
Operations at the Mill (1979–2004)
We knit socks at our Mill for 25 years before textile manufacturing in the U.S. started moving offshore. But we never left.
Darn Tough Vermont (2004)
Ric Cabot keeps business in Vermont by developing the idea for a premium sock brand backed by our Unconditional Lifetime Guarantee.
International Sales (2009)
Our first export was to Japan. Today, we’re in over 30 countries and counting, including the UK, Norway, Canada, and Taiwan.
Natanna Expansion (2016)
We revived the once defunct Nantanna Mill and moved Finishing and Packaging to this facility – just one mile from our Mill in Northfield.
Waterbury Mill (2021)
We added a secondary knitting floor to our existing corporate office space in Waterbury, featuring 96 brand-new machines.
Operations Today
Operations today look different than they did 40 years ago. But our mindset is the same. We’ve got better tech and access to more sustainable materials now. Our workforce has grown as have our Mills. But we’re still knitting socks in Vermont and focused on creating a genuine product. And much of that is attributed to the commitment of our long-tenured employees.
Adnan P. – Master Technician
If you want to watch a master at work, come find Adnan. He’s one of the many skilled and long-serving machine technicians at our Mill.
Raelene F. – Samples Coordinator
Raelene might know more about our socks than anyone else in Northfield – a praise she’s earned after 30+ years working for the Cabots.
Kris M. – Shift Manager
You can’t miss Kris at our Mill. His infectious personality is heartwarming, and quite frankly, one of many reasons people love working for him.
Family Owned, Community Built
We are family owned and have been since the beginning. We are three generations strong, and we know how to knit socks. It’s an ardent skill passed down from father to son, and we’re proud to still be doing it in Vermont. We’ve cultivated a community that stands behind our products. And it’s because of them – because of you – that we’re still here.
Our Family
Families as tight knit as ours are happy to show up. We share everything – the smiles, laughs, even our struggles. Because together, we all win.
Our Vermont Community
Thru-hikers, athletes, farmers, firefighters… our Vermont community is all around us. And their loyalty reminds us that we’re doing it right.
Our Darn Tough Community
We’re fortunate to partner with some of the best – including Jake Blauvelt, Mirna Valerio, and the Salmon Sisters. They represent us like we do them.
Our Mission & Values
Our mission is simple: to make the world's best socks, here in Vermont, USA, and stand behind them unconditionally. Our values are even simpler – We value families. We value differences. We are direct, straightforward, and truthful. We value honesty and a hard day’s work. We are penny foolish and pound wise. We are tough, independent, and respectful. We wear it on our sleeves. We are authentic. We have yet to produce our best sock.
